Taking the heat out of the data center boom
It’s fair to say that artificial intelligence (AI) continues to hot up – both figuratively and literally.
The technology is advancing quickly and has the potential to drive progress in many areas — for example by monitoring electricity grids or optimizing supply chains. According to some estimates, it could raise global GDP by 7% over 10 years.
At the same time, this rapid growth is placing a big demand on the data centers that power the technology.
As their capacity increases, so too does the heat they create. Up to 30% of the power consumption of a large data center is used for cooling. And, with the GPUs/CPUs that process AI data running 5-10 times hotter than traditional CPUs, that figure will continue to grow.
With the technology starting to outgrow traditional cooling methods, this video explores some alternative solutions that promise significant reductions in energy consumption.
