Throughout history clever ideas have transformed the human experience by making life easier for people on earth. Although we may not realise it, many of the things that we now take for granted were initially conceived and developed for military use.

From handy-to-have household items like duct tape to the jet engines that power the aircraft used by billions of passengers, these and many other game-changing inventions were originally intended for the battlefield.

In the same way that NASA’s space developments help society, or motor racing designs improve the safety and performance of everyday road vehicles, ideas created by the armed forces can also improve people’s lives. This video looks at five of the most significant breakthroughs to have made the leap from the military to civilian life.
