What is a cobot — and how can they boost manufacturing efficiency

A cobot, or collaborative robot, is designed to work safely alongside people, taking on repetitive or physically demanding tasks, such as picking, placing, assembling, welding and inspection.

In manufacturing, these machines offer a practical way to improve consistency, productivity and quality while supporting human workers rather than replacing them.

Cobots can not only help reduce errors and downtime, but they can also flexibly move between different tasks as manufacturing needs change. This is particularly important in factory settings where a wide variety of products are made in small lot numbers and where large-scale automation is therefore unsuitable.

As manufacturers face labor shortages due to declining working-age populations, cobots can also fill roles where skills gaps exist or where staffing is difficult. Delegating routine tasks to cobots can also free employees up to focus on higher-value activities, such as quality control and process improvement.
