Imagine this scenario: you’re riding on a driverless transport system and there’s a power outage. You’ll probably be stranded between stations until the problem is fixed, right?

Perhaps not, as key innovations in the latest automated people mover models promise to make such inconveniences a thing of the past.

Prismo, the newest automated guideway transit (AGT) system from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), is powered by onboard regenerative energy storage — essentially a high-power battery that can recharge in seconds. This allows the train to recharge at each stop and also during braking, meaning it does not need a power rail between stations.

This provides a range of benefits, from a 10% energy saving during operation to making the entire AGT system slimmer and simpler to build.

Onboard energy storage is just one of the technological advances that make this latest AGT more flexible and sustainable. Watch the video below to find out more.
